Qualcomm to Establish New R&D Center in Korea
February 06, 2010
Leading mobile phone chipmaker Qualcomm announced on February 1 that the company plans to set up a new R&D center in cooperation with the Korean industry, as well as academic and government institutions, with an aim to develop new-generation mobile communications technology, according to a press release by Qualcomm on February 1. The new R&D center will be Qualcomm's second R&D center outside the United States after establishing one in China, the Yonhap News Agency reported on February 1. Qualcomm, as a major CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) chip supplier for Korean mobile phone makers, including Samsung and LG, accounted for 99.4% of the total Korean CDMA chip market in 2008, according to the Yonhap News Agency again.

Additionally, Qualcomm also stated that the company will inject US$4 million in Pulsus Technologies - a Korea-based digital audio technology chipmaker - as part of the initiative announced by Qualcomm in April 2009 with KOTRA (Korea Trade Investment Promotion Agency) and the MKE (Ministry of Knowledge Economy) to increase cooperation with Korean companies, according again to the press release by Qualcomm.
